A Developmental Neural Model of Visual Word Perception
نویسنده
چکیده
A neurally pl ausi bl e model of how the process of visually perceiving a letter i n the context of a word is learned, and how such processing Occurs i n adults is proposed. The model consists of a collection of abstract letter feature detector neurons and their interconnections. The model also includes a learning rule that specifies how these interconnections evolve with experience. The interconnec-tions between neurons can be interpreted as representing the spatially redundant , sequentially redundant, and transgraphemic information i n letter string displays. (1977) " Brain-State-in-a-Box " (BSB) neural mechanism is then used to implement the proposed model. The resulting system makes explicit qualitative predictions using both letter recognition accuracy and reaction time as dependent measures. In particular, the model offers an integrated explanation of some experiments involving manipulations of orthographic regularity, masking, case alternations, and experi ence with words. The similarities and differences between the model and models proposed by Adams (1979) and McCl el l and and Rumelhart (1961) are also discussed.

Study on Relation between Visual Time Perception and Two Factors of Complexity in Architectural Images and Gender
Perceived time can have a significant impact on vital responses to daily activities and behaviors. Studies have shown that the surrounding environment can also affect human perception from time, place or event. The purpose of this study is to investigate the interrelationship between the environment and, more specifically, the architecture and the time perception of individuals. Also, the study...

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...
متن کاملVisual Development and the Acquisition of Motion Velocity Sensitivities
We consider the hypothesis that systems learning aspects of visual perception may benefit from the use of suitably designed developmental progressions during training. Four models were trained to estimate motion velocities in sequences of visual images. Three of the models were developmental models in the sense that the nature of their visual input changed during the course of training. These m...
متن کاملEffectiveness of a Combined Training Package on Strengthening Visual Perceptual Skills in Preschool Children
Objectives: Paper and pencil exercises are extensively used to enhance children’s visual perceptual skills, while exercises involving volumetric shapes have been neglected. The present study aimed to develop a combined training package, including volumetric shapes and paper and pencil exercises, and to investigate its effectiveness in strengthening the visual perceptual skills of preschool chil...
متن کاملWord and text processing in developmental prosopagnosia.
The "many-to-many" hypothesis proposes that visual object processing is supported by distributed circuits that overlap for different object categories. For faces and words the hypothesis posits that both posterior fusiform regions contribute to both face and visual word perception and predicts that unilateral lesions impairing one will affect the other. However, studies testing this hypothesis ...
